Power of the Pen Power of the Pen is a
state writing competition for 7th and 8th graders. Students are judged
on a holistic method which means that grammar and spelling
are not taken into consideration. Judges look for creativity and how the
students address the topic. Students are given a topic, blank paper, and
40 minutes in which to create a narrative or essay based on that theme.
Approximately 3,000 7th and 8th graders begin writing in Tournaments throughout
the sate of Ohio in January of each year. The culmination is the State
Tournament in which about 700 students compete. |
