Acquisition of Vocabulary
      I can use context clues to determine the meaning of synonyms and antonyms,               homophones, and homographs.
      I can recognize the difference between connotation and denotation.
      I can identify and understand new uses of words and phrases in text, such as                similes and metaphors.
      I can identify word origins to determine the meaning of unknown words or phrases.
      I can use the meaning of root word, prefixes, and suffixes to understand the                meaning of words.
      I can identify the meaning of abbreviations.
Concepts of Print, Comprehension Strategies, and Self Motivating Strategies
      I can compare and contrast information about a topic from two or more                resources.
Informational, Technical, and Persuasive Text
      I can make inferences about informational text.
      I can draw conclusions from information on maps, charts, graphs, and diagrams.
Literary Text
      I can explain how an author's choice of words appeals to the senses and suggests               mood.
      I can identify figurative language in literary works including idiom, simile, metaphor.
Writing Process
      I can organize my writing with a beginning, middle, and end.
      I can vary simple, compound, and complex sentence structure.
      I can vary language and style choices depending on the audience and purpose.
      I can add descriptive words and details and delete unimportant information.
      I can rearrange words, sentences, and paragraphs to clarify meaning.
Writing Applications
