2nd Nine Weeks

Acquisition of Vocabulary
      I can use context clues to determine the meaning of synonyms and antonyms.
      I can identify and apply the words synonym and antonym.
      I can use dictionaries and glossaries to understand meanings and pronunciations of               unknown words.
Concepts of Print, Comprehension Strategies, and Self Motivating Strategies
      I can summarize important information.
      I can make inferences or draw conclusions about what I've read, and support                my conclusions with evidence from the text.
      I can check my understanding by using reading strategies such as skimming, scanning,                and re-reading.
Informational, Technical, and Persuasive Text
      I can recognize cause and effect in nonfiction.
Writing Process
      I can reread and edit my writing to make it clear.
      I can use reference materials like dictionaries to select effective vocabulary.
      I can proofread and edit to improve my writing (example: spelling,                punctuation, capitalization, and grammar). I can identify sentence                fragments.
      I can apply tools to judge the quality of my writing. (example: rubrics, checklists,               and feedback).
Writing Applications
      I can write responses to novels, stories, and poems.
      I can write formal and informal letters that follow the following letter format:                date, proper salutation, body, closing, and signature. I can include                important information and demonstrate a sense of closure.
Writing Conventions
      I can understand and apply punctuation, grammar, and spelling rules.
      I can spell high-frequency words correctly.
      I can use commas and end marks correctly when writing.
      I can use correct capitalization.
      I can use subjects and verbs that are in agreement.
