1st Nine Weeks

Acquisition of Vocabulary
      I can determine the meaning of unknown words by using context clues.
Concepts of Print, Comprehension Strategies, and Self Motivating Strategies
      I can set a purpose for reading (to find out, to understand, to interpret, to enjoy ,               and to solve problems).
      I can predict and support my predictions.
      I can answer literal questions.
      I can choose independent reading materials (example: personal interest, knowledge               of authors and genres, or recommendations from others).
      I can independently read books for various purposes (example: for
               enjoyment, to gain information, to perform a task, etc.).
Informational, Technical, and Persuasive Text
      I can tell the difference between fact and opinion.
Literary Text
      I can describe the thoughts, words, and interactions of characters.
      I can identify the setting of a story and describe how it affects the story.
      I can identify the main events, the major conflicts, and resolution of a story.
Writing Process
      I can generate writing ideas through discussion and from printed material.
      I can state and develop a main idea for my writing.
      I can develop a purpose and audience for my writing.
      I can use organizational strategies to plan my writing (example:                brainstorming, lists, webs, and Venn Diagrams).
      I can create paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting sentences. I can                indent my paragraphs and link my paragraphs with transitional words
              and phrase.
Writing Applications
      I can produce informal writings for various purposes (example: messages,                journals, notes, and poems).
Writing Conventions
      I can understand and apply punctuation, grammar, and spelling rules.
      I can use nouns, pronouns, and verbs including regular, irregular, past, present, and               future tenses.
      I can use objective and nominative case pronouns.
      I can use irregular plural nouns.
Communications: Oral and Visual
      I can demonstrate good listening strategies.
      I can recall the main idea with details and identify the purpose of presentations.
      I can tell the difference between the speaker's opinion and facts.
